Cloud native – a revolution postponed

Why the opportunity in NFV/SDN is stalling and what we can do about it.

NFV, SDN and Cloud promised a revolution in the way communication providers could increase earnings from networks through service innovation and reduce the costs of delivering these network services. Yet six years into this “revolution” we have yet to truly achieve this potential. This report looks at the possible reasons for this and ways we can avoid these becoming a failed over hyped technology.

Why the opportunity in NFV/SDN is stalling and what we can do about it.

– NFV, SDN and Cloud promised a revolution in the way communication providers could increase earnings from networks through service innovation and reduce the costs of delivering these network services. Yet six years into this “revolution” we have yet to truly achieve this potential. This report looks at the possible reasons for this and ways we can avoid these becoming a failed over hyped technology.

– This report critically examines the current state of the CSP software enabled network market. It makes a “call for action”, to all industry players, for changes that will avoid NFV and SDN from becoming two more over-hyped failures. We make recommendations that are centered around the need to move CSPs away from applying a veneer of webscale software culture to their existing practice; to one where the culture of DevOps delivery, rapid innovation of minimum viable product, high levels of automation and online/API driven services are built into the CSP.

– In writing this report, Appledore has aimed to highlight, in strong terms, the issues the industry faces and potential remedies. We have deliberately “pulled no punches” in our writing. We welcome feedback on where you agree or disagree with our findings, and seek to start an industry wide discussion.
