Telco Cloud for Operators: A Blueprint for Success

$1,500.00

“Success in telco cloud starts with avoiding a repeat of history’s mistakes.”

The reinvention of telecom operators as cloud-based businesses will have profound effects on the wider industry. Not only will it be key to new levels of agility and speed, but it will enable new sources of revenue, new types of customer experience, and new ways to differentiate. But telecom has unique and demanding characteristics that make the realization of a “telco cloud” particularly challenging.

In this research note we set out a framework for CSPs’ strategies for their re-platforming onto cloud, developed in part on based on practical experience of deploying the world’s first cloud-native network in Rakuten Mobile Japan. (In a previous report, we looked at how CSPs can benefit from distributed cloud-native networks, the “Everywhere Edge”.)

This report is part of a set – with a separate blueprint for vendors detailed here.

This Research Note is published within our Distributed Cloud Infrastructure Management and Operator Strategy & Vision research modules, and is available free to subscribers of those modules, via their Appledore Digital Locker.

Description

The adoption of telco cloud is far more than a mere “technology upgrade” to the network, with its associated OSS and BSS.  Achieving the promise of telco cloud (unlocking new revenue opportunities and operational productivity) requires a clear view of what that business success looks like, a clear understanding of what a CSP’s current state is, a framework for how to balance today’s reality with tomorrow’s promise as well as the trade-offs to be faced on the telco cloud journey. Operationally, learning to measure and manage against new KPIs and a culture of continuous improvement are also essential to the successful adoption of telco cloud.

Procurement, product management, and business models should all be stakeholders – and expect change – along the way. A successful plan considers the limits of change; and cultural change can be the most challenging.

Finally, while the telco cloud has the potential to transform CSPs in many ways, each CSP will have a distinct approach to cloud adoption and journey to cloud business success. We identify four distinct types of cloud CSP. Key to planning the journey is clarity about a CSP’s current position, willingness to change and ability to make that change across the organization, not only in the CTO organization.
