Ericsson and a host of global operators have announced plans to form a joint venture to establish a single platform that combines network APIs from multiple operators. The platform will present the GSMA Open Gateway set of APIs (in Linux Foundation CAMARA form) via various developer platforms. Will this new entity lead to a serious uptick in telco revenues from 5G networks? Can it succeed where similar previous efforts have failed? What’s different this time?

Our Research Note provides our take on the limited information provided so far, and commentary on the relationship/impact to adjacent efforts from other vendors and telcos.

In addition to Ericsson, the list of founding shareholders is: América Móvil, AT&T, Bharti Airtel, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Reliance Jio, Singtel, Telefonica, Telstra, T-Mobile, Verizon and Vodafone
