Autonomous Networks, NaaS, APIs: 3x the return for 0.5x the investment

“One plan. One architecture. No further modifications nor integration: simple, elegant and cost efficient for the long haul.”

Three major telecom initiatives—Autonomous Networks (AN), Network-as-a-Service (NaaS), and API exposure—share common architectural foundations and organizational changes, and should be managed as a single transformation. Treated independently, they risk duplicate investment, operational friction, and inconsistent models; treated together, they can deliver sustained operational efficiency, faster innovation, and revenue growth at roughly half the investment.

This paper explains how.

CSPs can frame autonomy around intent-driven, closed-loop operations where “everything is a service,” creating internal NaaS capabilities that can be exposed externally via APIs with minimal incremental effort. By standardizing on service interfaces and decoupling implementations, CSPs can reduce systems integration complexity, accelerate delivery, and lower maintenance costs. This alignment also enables easier commercialization of network capabilities—SLA monitoring, provisioning, premium handling—in developer-friendly marketplaces.

The paper highlights why telcos have struggled with APIs, and concludes with specific recommendations to deliver three times the business impact for a single, transformative investment.
