Aurelius acquire Nokia Enterprise Campus Edge (ECE)
“The two announcements seem to mark the end of telco CSPs and vendors seeing a major opportunity in industry/enterprise private networks.” – Francis Haysom
This Appledore Research note examines Nokia’s sale of its Enterprise Campus Edge (ECE) business – its private wireless, edge compute and industrial devices portfolio – to private equity firm Aurelius. The deal lands just as Ericsson repositions its own private networking business, raising a bigger question about where enterprise private networks now sit in the telecom industry’s ambitions.
Drawing on an analyst call with ECE and Aurelius leadership, we assess what each party gains, where the boundary with Nokia’s retained Mission Critical Enterprise business falls, and how ECE’s AI and edge inference ambitions shape its growth case. We also give our candid view of why private networks proved harder for telcos than the industrial automation vision once promised, and what that means for the sectors Nokia is keeping.
This note is for CSP strategy teams, network vendors and enterprise connectivity buyers who want a grounded read on the private wireless market after a decade of hype.
Companies mentioned in this report: Aurelius, Cradlepoint, Ericsson, Lufthansa Technik and Nokia.
