The telecom industry has made several attempts to create APIs that will make tapping network capabilities as simple as adding a line of code to an application. But incremental revenue seems to have been largely captured instead by third parties, with limited revenue going to telcos. 5G may change things, and the GSMA’s Open Gateway and related Linux Foundation Camara effort are signs of fresh optimism.
